17 year old Thomas Telford School student, Daniel Connolly from Dawley Bank has been invited to take part in the British Mathematical Olympiad.

Daniel’s invitation is the result of his success in the recent 2010 Senior Maths Challenge which involves answering 25 tough multiple choice questions in 90 minutes.

Only the top 1000 students aged 16-19 from schools and colleges across the country who took part in the Challenge get through to the Olympiad. Daniel was the top performing Thomas Telford School student out of the 30 who took part. Daniel and four other students received Gold Certificates and nineteen others achieved Silver or Bronze standard.

Other Gold winners were Sukhvinder Gill, Laurence Newman, Sam Bentham and 17 year old Gurpreet Johl from Sutton Heights who was also one of the top performing GCSE students in the country.

Mr Paul Halcro, Deputy Head responsible for Mathematics at Thomas Telford School, said: “I am delighted that Daniel has been invited to take part in the British Mathematical Olympiad and that more than three quarters of our students who took part in the Maths Challenge received certificates which are awarded to just the top 40% of students nationally".
