THOMAS TELFORD FOOTBALL TEAMS SCORE TWO NATIONAL CUP SUCCESSES
Thomas Telford School football teams reached three ESFA National Cup Finals this season and have won two!
Yesterday, the Under 14 boys beat Queens School from Watford 2-0 in a thoroughly convincing and deserved victory. Goal scorers were Chaquille Buchanan and Ben Carter. The game was played at Craven Cottage (Fulham FC) on a fantastic surface and with a Premiership referee - Steven Bennett.
Ashley Burd, Under 14 team Co-Manager said: “It's a great feeling securing a national title and in particular for these boys as two years ago they had been beaten in extra time at the Under 12's National final.”
Earlier this week, the Under 13 girls beat Maiden Erlegh School from Reading on penalties after a full time score of 1-1 (Goal scorer Courtney Owen) and no goals in extra time. The final score was 4-3 on sudden death penalties (3-3 after normal penalties). This match was played at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium last Saturday and was supported by fellow students and parents.
Not such a good day though for the Under 16 girls who played William Farr School from Lincoln and were beaten 2-0 at West Bromwich's Hawthorne Stadium. The game was very tight and with TTS chasing the equaliser, the second and decisive goal was scored after a breakaway following a TTS corner one minute from time. More than 900 TTS students were there to cheer on their team.
Head of PE, Mr Iain Sweeney commented: “It has been a fantastic year of national cup football at Thomas Telford School. To have three teams in national cup finals is a tremendous achievement and we are delighted with the progress and achievements of all teams, particularly our Under 13 girls and Under 14 boys. I am certain that the opportunity of playing and winning a national final at an outstanding stadium will live long in the memories of all our students.”
Steve Wilderspin, TTS Director of Football, added: “Both Under 13 girls and Under 14 boys teams also won their respective County Cup competitions to achieve a fantastic cup double. Both cup victories have capped a wonderful season for the school at both county and national level for our boys and girls. The students and staff thoroughly deserve the honours and success that they have achieved. It has been a wonderful end to a record breaking season for the school.”
