Thomas Telford Student Wins Midlands Golf
Mon, 21 Sep 2009
Thomas Telford School Sixth Form student, Sam Benton, has won the Under 18 Midlands Golf Championship held at Kidderminster Golf Club.
The only player to finish with a two round under par total, 17 year old Sam from Wolverhampton, was delighted with his success. Past winners of this tournament include golf legend Sandy Lyle and current European Tour players Steve Webster, Scott Drummond, David Gilford and Sam Walker.
Head of PE at the School, Mr Iain Sweeney, commented: "Sam has all the makings of a fine young golfer. This latest success comes on top of his fourth place in the prestigious Daily Telegraph National Junior Golf Championship which was held in Abu Dhabi last November."
Sam said: ‘"It is a great honour to win this title and have my name on the trophy next to some of the greatest names in the game. I now believe that I have the ability to live up to my expectations of playing on the European Tour. Wins like this make all the hard work I put in on my game worthwhile and I hope to have more wins in the future to achieve a career as a professional."
