Thomas Telford School achieved a Sportsmark Gold with Distinction Award in May 2003 in recognition of the outstanding quality of the sports provision provided by the School.

Sportsmark Gold is awarded to schools that provide a well balanced and wide ranging physical education and sports programme both during and after School.

Sport England first awarded the School a Sportsmark Gold in 1997 but when the School was reassessed in 2000, the Awards Panel felt that the standards achieved by the School far exceeded the criteria for Gold and so a Distinction was awarded.

In May 2003, the School again achieved this highest award.

Each student receives a minimum three hours Physical Education provision each week.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in the numerous inter-house competitions organised after school.

Competitive sport against other schools is fully encouraged.

Over one hundred students are involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Students can study a wide variety of courses, including GCSE and AGCE Physical Education, BTec Sport, GNVQ Leisure and Tourism as well as Sports Leaders Awards at Junior and Community levels together with a variety of sports coaching qualifications.
